Ankara University Biotechnology Institute first began its postgraduate training activities as a department within the Institute of Health Sciences and by the 2/9/2002 date and 2002/4749 numbered decree of the Council of Ministers (continued academic career with an institute status. Graduate education in Biotechnology Institute started as an interdisciplinary institute has been given under the Department of Basic Biotechnology within the programs of Basic Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Socio-economics and Biotechnology. Ankara University Biotechnology Institute received the support of SPO in September, 2002 that would last for seven years by the attempts of Prof. Dr. Ömer Gebizlioğlu who was the vice-rector when the institute was founded. On one hand, under the scope of the project, infrastructures of discrete research laboratories were supported in departments and faculties working in the field of biotechnology at our university, and on the other, the foundation of a central laboratory that would serve Ankara University and all over the country was completed in December, 2004. With its identity of both a service and a research laboratory, this lab gave a significant infrastructure support to a lot of research and/or researchers both within and outside the university and still maintains the same level of support.
